Learning the techniques of how to meditate will lead to an understanding of techniques how to meditate. Learning leads to understanding. Understanding leads to wisdom. Meditation is a skill that requires focusing the mind, emptying it of extraneous thoughts and allowing it to relax. Meditation is ideal for stress relief as it provides a sense of inner calm that should be available during not only meditation but also when a person is feeling harried, rushed or stressed.

Beginning Techniques How To Meditate

Learning to meditate requires a sense of discipline. Beginning meditation requires some basic techniques how to meditate that are easy to follow and introduces beginners to the benefits of the skill. Before getting started, avoid consuming alcohol, caffeine or food for at least two hours prior to meditating.

Next, choose a location that is peaceful, quiet and free of extra distractions such as a television, radio or other source of noise (don’t forget to turn off the cell phone). Beginners need the extra quiet to aid their success. If meditating indoors, dim the lights and if outdoors, choose a shaded location. Pleasant scents (scented candles or flowers) are encouraged, but avoid sharp, tangy scents (citrus) that may distract.

Begin by sitting in an upright position either in a chair on the floor, provided there is back and head support. Avoid tight clothes or shoes that will pinch. Physical distractions are numerous for beginners so it’s best to eliminate them from the get go. Focus on a chosen thought while meditating. The thought can be as simple as breathing in and out. Don’t worry about other thoughts drifting in, just let them pass right back out again. Also, don’t expect to fall into a deep meditative state during the first few attempts, like any discipline, meditation requires practice.

The goal of meditation is empty the mind of distractions and stress while at the same time creating calm. Breathing is the first stage of techniques how to meditate that a person must learn. Practice breathing by sitting comfortably in a dim, quiet place and focus on inhaling and exhaling without becoming sleepy.

  • Keep eyes half-closed
  • Focus on breathing naturally (in through the nose out through the mouth)
  • Take several long deep breaths to begin
  • Concentrate on inhaling for a count of four and exhaling for a count of four
  • Other thoughts that flow in should be released to flow right back out, only concentrate on breathing

Practice this breathing meditation for 10 to 15 minutes each day until the restive state of breathing can be achieved without concentration. This is an ideal technique for managing stressful situations in the car, at work or at home. By calming the breathing, the mind is calmed and the body will relax from a stressed state.

Other Meditation Techniques

The key to meditation is relaxation; relaxation that is achieved without falling asleep. It can be difficult for the average person who is on the run constantly to avoid falling asleep when they first achieve this state of mental and physical relaxation, but honestly it only takes practice.

Meditation techniques can include any or all of the following:

  • Yoga - Yoga is an Eastern discipline of stretching that clears and focuses the mind while pushing the body. Yoga is extremely popular in Western fitness courses. When choosing a yoga class for meditation, look for a class that is for beginners and offers a guided component. The instructor will walk their class through the positions and help guide breathing to achieve a peaceful state.
  • Hot Bath - A hot bath is the common cure all for a long stressful day. Candles or dim lights can set the mood while bath salts, oils or bubbles can be used to add a pleasant scent. The warm water has a soothing effect on tense muscles and the intimate privacy of a bathroom creates a quiet atmosphere where the mind can relax.
  • Relaxation CDs - Whether selecting a guided relaxation CD or simply a CD of soothing music and nature sounds, CDs can help create an audio atmosphere conducive to relaxing the mind and by extension the body.

Benefits of Meditation

Meditation benefits the body and the mind. It decreases heart rate and respiration while increasing blood flow. Meditation leads to a deeper state of relaxation while reducing stress. It improves focus and mental concentration. Medically it reduces anxiety attacks, helps reduce high blood pressure and decreases muscle tension. Regular meditation can boost a person’s self-confidence, self-esteem, immune system and much, much more.
