Stress Free Jobs
From LoveToKnow Stress
Most experts will advise that stress-free jobs do not exist, rather it is a matter of degree: high stress versus low stress. In order to find work that is low stress, a person must determine what particular factors will enhance their satisfaction. Generally, work that allows the person a reasonable degree of control, good compensation, and a pleasant working environment is less likely to cause stress.
Causes of Stress at Work
Experts like Andrea Kay insist that some jobs "will be less demanding, have less responsibility, or will demand less in terms of precision or stamina" but won't be stress-free. Furthermore, she advises against making a selection on that basis alone because jobs that fit those criteria may not interest all people.
According to Laurence Shatkin, in his recent book 150 Best Low Stress Jobs, the most significant factors in determining whether or not a job is stressful include:
- Hours worked per week
- Amount of time given to complete tasks
- Competition
- Accuracy
- Conflicts with difficult co-workers, supervisors
- Public speaking requirements
- Unpleasant work space
- Whether or not decisions impact others
- Having conflicts with one's own values
In general, better education increases the likelihood that you will live longer because you are less likely to suffer from stress induced diseases such as high blood pressure and heart disease. Poverty and low level work from a lack of education are directly correlated to high stress.
Stress vs. Satisfaction
According to a survey conducted by Money Magazine, too much work, boss' behavior, and long hours were the main causes of job stress. They also found that satisfaction does not always equal stress-free jobs. Forty-one percent of workers who were most satisfied with their jobs considered them stressful. On the other hand, sixty-one percent of dissatisfied workers consider their jobs to be stressful. This means if you don't like your job it's much more likely to be a source of stress.
| Type | Commute | Hours Worked | Time Off | Telecommuting | Vacation |
| Most Satisfied | 85% less than 1hour | 56 hours/wk | 82% easy to get | 62% yes | 27days |
| Least Stressed | 87% less than 1 hour | 62 hours/wk | 81%easy to get | yes | 38 days |
Since there is some correlation between satisfaction and stress, perhaps the answer is to look for satisfying work. Even if a physician is recommending a less stressful job for health reasons, consider that peace of mind and attitude play critical roles in combating stress induced problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
Relatively Stress-Free Jobs
- Yoga and meditation instructor- Although an instructor may occasionally have to deal with uncooperative limbs and joints, the entire purpose of the work is to provide freedom from stress.
- Classical Orchestra Musician- These musicians play amazing music and are for the most part directed by their conductor. Producing music is a well known stress reliever. Responsibility is limited, hours are good, and there is not much conflict.
- In House Corporate Counsel- An in house attorney for a company gets to do a variety of things, mostly involving low stress contract work and if someone decides to sue, an outside team conducts the litigation.
- Plastic Surgeon- On Nip/Tuck, plastic surgeons seem to be more stressed than air traffic controllers but in the real world plastic surgeons are healthy, surgery is elective, and the compensation is great.
- Forester- Working outdoors in a natural environment with relatively few co-workers means practically none of the factors on the stress causing scale exist.
- Florist- For reasons similar to those cited above, working with plants in a lovely environment and minimal supervision equals calm and quiet.
- Telephone Line Worker-This is another job that minimizes contact with stressful co-workers, requires no challenge to personal values and no cramped office quarters.
How to Make Your Job Stress Free
In order to have low stress or to control stress at work there are several things that can be done. First, improve your status by applying for a promotion or go back to school to improve your experience and credentials.
Next, improve your work environment by making sure your office space is adequate and pleasant. Work in an office where you can be social, but productive as well.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, learn to switch off. Do not work around the clock by thinking about work constantly; mediate, go for walks, and hang out with family and friends. Quick stress relievers can help turn a stressful job into a more relaxing environment.
The importance of eliminating stress in work and life cannot be overemphasized, and finding stress-free jobs can help you choose a career path that can be both productive and satisfying.
