Knowing How to Relax During the Holidays

Knowing how to relax during the holidays means you may actually enjoy them. The holidays are joyous occasions, not ones in which you spend countless hours worrying and rushing. Here are some suggestions on how you can tame the craziness of the holiday season.

Think and Shop Ahead

Who said that you have to wait until the Christmas bells are ringing to do your holiday shopping? Who also said you have to wait until the last minute to think about what you are going to buy everyone? The best thing you can do for yourself is shop all year round for Christmas presents. As soon as you see something that you know your family member or friend would like, buy it. It doesn't matter if it's January, at least you will have cut down on one less person you need to buy for when Christmas rolls around again.

Organize Your Seasonal Decorations

It's so frustrating to take down a whole bunch of boxes from the attic to find that you are still missing stuff and need to go searching for more. After Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, make sure to take extra care when packaging and storing your decorations. You want to separate and label everything so you know when you grab something what you still need before opening all the boxes. Consider making a list of things to buy for next season while it’s fresh in your mind.

It's Family Time

It's time for families to be together and that means meal preparation, decoration set up, and all of those other not so fun chores. You may hear some grumbles when you suggest this idea, but if you turn it into a tradition, your family may start to look forward to it in a few years.

Keep Away from Family Disagreements

This is supposed to be a loving and joyous time with family, but it doesn't always work out that way. Bringing a whole bunch of people together that don't normally hang out together may provide you with a recipe for disaster. Stay clear of as many family disagreements as possible. This means if you have to bluntly tell someone that you don't care to discuss a certain matter or just walking away from the person, then that is what you will have to do. Don't let the stress of other people take over your holiday cheer.

Egg Nog Is a Traditional Drink for a Reason

It's true that some people should stay away from alcoholic beverages because it only causes trouble. However, if alcohol is a de-stressor because it calms you, there's no harm in having a couple of drinks so long as you drink responsibly and don’t use the alcohol as an excuse to let your anger or stress out of control.

Keep Yourself Sane and Take a Break

When you start to feel like you are losing your mind – a common occurrence during this time of year – take a break and do some quick stress relievers. You may feel like you don't have the time because you won't finish what you need to do, but if you are less stressed, you will find that you have that extra time.

It Will All Work Out

Think back to prior holiday celebrations: things probably didn't end up as badly as you had anticipated. There's no reason why it should turn out badly this time either. Just remember this as you start to get frazzled over the long list of things to do. You will get through that list and if you don't end up doing some of it, no one will ever notice.

Celebrate the holidays, don't dread them. This is supposed to be the best time of year, so indulge in it, and knowing how to relax during the holidays can help you make the most of them in a delightful and memorable way. Eat, drink, and be merry!
