Effects of Job Related Stress
From LoveToKnow Stress
The effects of job related stress are much more serious than you might think. Stress can interfere with almost every other area of your life. It doesn't only affect you, but the life of the people around you as well. If you experience work-related anxiety, read on to find out how it may have taken over your life.
Effects of Job Related Stress on Your Life
The effects of job related stress infiltrates four areas of your life: Career, family, social and health. Take a deeper look to see how each one affects each area and how you can start improving your life.
Career
At one time, you may have been optimistic on what you wanted to accomplish in a career. You may have wanted to climb the corporate ladder or start a business of your own. However, all those dreams came to a screeching halt because instead of working on your career, you are busier with feeling overwhelmed, bogged down by constant flow of work, and burned out. You have no time to do anything and when you do have time, it's the last thing you want to think about.
Having a huge workload also changes your personality. You may have had a determined and authoritative personality before burnout, which would have helped you move up in your career; however, you are so overworked and stressed that when you meet co-workers or people that are more important in your business, you crumble. You are not motivated to make a good impression nor do you care anymore.
Helping Your Career
If you have a high-intensity job, there may be no way you can avoid the stress. However, you can find ways to reduce it so you can still shine and make strides in your career goals. If you feel burned out, take a vacation. If you take paperwork home with you, leave it at the office. Finally, set time aside each day to manage your anxiety levels so you can start focusing on your career goals.
Family
After a long day at the office, you come home and the last thing you want to deal with is screaming kids or a needy significant other. You just want to be able to crash on the couch and try to forget about the chaos you just went through. After awhile, your family starts to dread when you come home because you are unpleasant to be around or it's like you aren't even home.
Helping Your Family
You don't want to lose your family to your work. Coming home should be a refuge from a hectic day, not the source of additional anxiety. If you find that you come home most days grumpy or you disappear as soon as you enter the door, it's time to take a vacation. Pack up your family and spend time together. This will help your relationship with your family as well as help you lower your overall anxiety level. You also need to start incorporating stress management to help keep your anxiety levels low.
Social
Much like how you are with your family, you are with your friends as well. Every time you get together with your friends, either you can't stop talking about work or you take out your frustrations on them. No one wants to hang out with someone that is always complaining.
Helping Your Social Life
Having friends is crucial because it helps you release tension and have fun. Without friends, you could quickly grow lonely and depressed. The first thing you need to do to save your social life is to take control of your anxiety. If you need to vent about something, go right ahead, that's what friends are for, but don't make it a habit. Start meeting friends for activities such as a game of golf or tennis. This way, you can focus on other things rather than talking about problems.
Health
Chronic high anxiety levels lead to many health problems. When you are under anxiety, your immune system goes down, your heart beats faster, and your blood pressure rises. If these level stay where they are for long periods, they have a difficult time coming back down. This makes you susceptible to illness such as colds and flu, and puts your body at risk for more serious medical disorders such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
Keeping Healthy
After a long and laborious day, the last thing you want to do is workout. However, exercise is one of the best ways to release tension. It will help you feel better and calm down. Your mood will improve and so will your immune system. Soon you will find that you can handle things more effectively and you are not as quick to stress out.
Conclusion
Take time for yourself each day. This will help you figure out what you want out of life. Sometimes people get so busy with their jobs that they forget that there are others things in life to enjoy. Taking control of your stress will make you a more productive, likable and happier person.
