Anger Management Seminars and Uncontrolled Anger

Everyone experiences feelings of anger, and angry outbursts, from time to time. It is when that anger is out of your control and no one can reason with you that it becomes an anger management issue. Uncontrolled anger can manifest itself in many ways including:

  • Physical violence toward oneself and others
  • Angry verbal outbursts
  • Unprovoked arguments
  • Physical violence that includes breaking furniture and other items or putting holes in walls
  • Raising your voice without cause
  • Clenched fists

Uncontrolled anger is very damaging to those around you. Family, friends and co-workers may be intimated, or even feel fear, when your anger outbursts are out of control. Anger management seminars offer help for those that are unable to control their angry feelings.

Seminars are generally run by a psychologist, trained therapist or behavior specialist. They are often held at various locations including:

  • Mental health offices
  • Private therapists offices
  • Schools

What to Expect During a Seminar on Anger Management

Seminars on anger management can be conducted during one session, while others may be a series of seminars spread over a time period of four to six weeks. Along with anger management skills, seminars generally include communication skills and techniques of stress management. Naturally, every seminar and facilitator is different but the following scenario is an example of a typical anger management seminar.

During the seminar the facilitator generally asks you to do a self evaluation of your anger issues to help you understand how anger manifests itself in your life. The leader also explains that anger, and the way you express it, is a learned behavior. Once you understand that concept, you have taken the first step towards gaining control of your anger. You know that you need to unlearn your previous behavioral responses to anger.

The seminar leader goes on to explain methods to change your normal behavioral responses when faced with a situation that causes anger. The facilitator will explain how to recognize the various anger triggers, talk about appropriate and inappropriate anger responses, and offer methods and techniques of dealing with angry emotions.

Since seminars are groups of people, unlike private anger management counseling, members of the group are usually encouraged to discusses various triggers that set of their angry emotional outbursts. You may find common anger triggers and gain insight as ideas are exchanged within the group. Role-playing may be used to illustrate the techniques of anger management and help the participants understand and internalize them.

After the Seminar

If you were given literature or a DVD to take home when you attended the seminar, make sure that you take the time to read it or watch it. The purpose of giving you this material is to reinforce what was learned at the seminar. They are also meant to be used when you feel you need them, for example if you are faced with an emotional situation and you need help coping with your feelings of anger.

Once the seminar has been completed, it is up to you to decide whether you need further anger management help. Some people may discover the root of their anger comes from unresolved issues within themselves or their families and opt for individual counseling. Others may recognize the fact that their anger is so out of control they need anger management classes or individual instruction.
